freezes after reboot during install

I can install the base system. It ejects the CD & reboots, then locks up right after it says "Loading modules" which is right after "Loading Kernel". I *just* installed 5.10 on another almost identical machine with no issue.

what could be the problem?

Any type of errors, such as "kernel panic"?

nope... just stops. no message.

edit: as a matter of fact, the system doesn't actually lock, I can hit keys and they show up on the screen....
