Fluxbuntu on Dell Latitude D520 - SLiM craps out

I just got a company laptop for work, a Dell Latitude D520, and I decided to try out Fluxbuntu. The install went great, but I can't seem to get booted to the login manager (SLiM). The Fluxbuntu splash screen comes up, and when it's almost done the screen goes all wonky, with a few horizontal and vertical lines across it and that's it.

This does not appear to be a problem with X, because I can boot into recovery mode and run startx as root, and Fluxbox starts up just fine.

The graphics card is an Intel 945GM. Any ideas on how to tackle this? I have no experience with using SLiM and so I don't the first thing about what could be causing this. Google searches have been fruitless.

The plot thickens... while still in recovery mode, I typed "exit" and it proceeded to load SLiM just fine.
