Hi action_owl,

I do not know a lot about kernels but I think a 'real-time' or a 'preempt' kernel is the just the regular kernel with diffrent configuration. I have installed Vector on my pc and it is a pre-empt kernel (same as realtime, I think). If you are not good with configuring a kernel I would suggest Vector as it comes boxed in with a pre-empt kernel.

Hope this helps.

Hi Action Owl,

It is really easy:

Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-rt
Reboot.

This will give you the exact same real-time kernel used in Ubuntu Studio.

Which version of Fluxbuntu are you using?

awesome that is easy, thanks snowpine

I downloaded fluxbuntu 7.10 but I havent installed it yet
I'm trying to find a version of 8.10 testing floating around the net somewhere but I don't think I'm going to be able to

I'm trying to see how far I can push a P2 with 256 RAM, I have a few them I thought maybe I could turn them into a dedicated 4, 6, or 8 track recorders.

Sounds like a fun project, good luck!

ps If you are going to install Fluxbuntu 7.10, you should do it soon, as Canonical is ending support for Ubuntu 7.10 in April. Have you checked out Crunchbang? It has similar system requirements to Fluxbuntu, except it uses Openbox instead of Fluxbox. Also it is under active development, the forums are busy, and it comes in 8.04 and 8.10 versions. http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/542/fluxbuntu/

Personally, I have moved away from Ubuntu-based distros on my older computer (500mhz pentium 3 with 256mb ram), as lightweight distros like SliTaz, Puppy, DSL, etc. are just so much faster. I do not have personal experience with audio production, but I know there are some small music-specific distros like Pupitup, dyne:bolic, etc. that have lighter system requirements than Fluxbuntu.
