flashplayer-nonfree causing problems

I have Kubuntu 6.10 and tried to use Adept Package Manager to install 'flashplayer-nonfree' and it got halfway through the install and I had to agree to a EULA but the 'OK' button would not activate and I had to kill the install. Now I cannot uninstall flash:
Quote:
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process
dpkg: error processing flashplugin-nonfree (--remove):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
what(): basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid
Aborted
tparks@dell4500:~$ Errors were encountered while processing:
flashplugin-nonfree
I says that it needs an upgrade but it runs into errors trying to upgrade. Now whenever I try to add anything I get the error:
Quote:
There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages.
If I try to add anything via apt-get it keeps trying to update the package flash and it can't so nothing gets installed.

Is there any way to remove this broken install of flashpluging-nonfree?

Thanks,
Todd

That's what you get for trying to install non-free stuff.
You will need to use the various tools to test and fix the packages. Start with cleaning.

Most of us use synaptic with aptitude or apt-get, the cli managers have debugging and cleaning commands.

You could try dpkg --audit to locate part-installed packages on your system.

The command that fixes that is normally
Code:
sudo fuser -vik /var/cache/debconf/config.dat ; sudo dpkg --configure -a

Simon,

Point well taken regarding using non-free software. I went ahead and reinstalled Linux (I got tired of messing with it and it was just installed anyway so it was not like I had it very customized). Can you recommend a Free and Open Source alternative to the proprietary FlashPlayer that I had before?

I guess that if I use 'main' and 'universe' and not 'multiverse' that should be fine?

Thanks,
Todd

My normal recommendation is to favor the Ubuntu repositories. In this case however I would go to the Adobe site and get the recently released Flash 9 for Linux. It comes as a binary and is properly installed with the provided shell script.
