Arrow Firebird setup left unconfigured.

I have ubuntu 8 10. I tried installing firebird 2.0 and then 2.1 (one at a time) with synaptics pm but it gives errors like
exit status 1 and
leaving unconfigured blah ...

Previously it had worked. For complete removal of previously installed fb, I had deleted some fb files manually which may have caused the error.
How can I now re-install fb sucessfully again?
