Files created on wrong monitor on dual-screen

I have Ubuntu 14.01.3 and am using Cinnamon as the desktop. The computer is an HP 2000 Notebook with 2 monitors. When i create new files they show up on the external VGA monitor, not on my main laptop monitor desktop. If I move then to the desktop, then re-log into Unity, they are back on the external monitor. I guess I have to move them for each desktop.

Why are new files not showing on the "main" monitor where I have the panel, etc? I've seen lots of postings, but no resolutions.

In Cinnamon, in system settings > Display, it shows both monitors and there is a button "Set as Primary". When I have e.g. the "Laptop" display selected and I click this button, it goes gray. Does that mean it *is* or *is not* set as the primary? I cannot click the gray button, I have to switch to the other monitor where that button is now clickable. Very confusing as to what the state of the button means. Help.
