Hi mate.

You need to install the Real-codec from RealPlayer's site. http://www.real.com/linux/

I need this too but for some reason the "Download realplayer" button on their site doesnt work. I've been trying for days. I used to run Ubuntu but now run Xubuntu. After downloading relaplayer and installing in UBUNTU I had no probs so my impression is that it will work for Xubuntu - just needs their bloody download site to work, at the mo its crap!

Let me know if you succeed.

Or, install the mplayerplug-in: http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/

It's also probably available in your package manager.

I installed Iceape from the repos and the windows media player streams from the BBC are now working fine.

But I'm still having problems with quicktime streams.

Well, I'm not a fellow Brit (Not for several generations anyhow) but you can get streaming radio by going in to the Synaptic Pkg. manager and finding Streamripper, Streamtuner and XMMS. Download those three packages and you'll be able to play streams.
Yes, you can even find the Queen's English in some of the streams

Good Luck!
