to be honest i don't know if there is one, but i'd really assume that it's just random junk. i assume you are aware that you're not meant to use the root login under ubuntu at all? instead use the sudo framework to get the same job done. in fact if you really need to break their basic principles in the first place, i assume you can change roots passwd via sudo anyway.

it does not ask for a root password, it asks for *YOUR* password. it is not a problem being root when needed on most distros, however ubunut deliberately present a different way of doing things, that doesn't suit being logged in as root directly. it's not about security, it's about ease of use for ubuntu's perspective. if you use ubuntu you need not know root even exists (hint... makes it more like windows)

being root mostly in fedora is definitely bad though.

Shouldn't you be able to change the root password on the 'users and groups' GUI? I know I did. But then again, I use Dapper. I'm not sure if it's different on Feisty.

You don't ever need the root password in Ubuntu.

Some people like to set a root password because they come from other Linux distros that use a root account, and they just want some familiarity.

Everything can be accomplished using sudo, gksudo, or kdesu. Even if you want a root shell, you can do
Code:
sudo -s
Once again, there is no reason you need to set a root password in Ubuntu.

Read more about why:
