FC5 to UBUNTU
I have been using FC5 now for at least a year . Would like to try out UBUNTU . I have a backup of the FC5 installation using dcfldd ( same as dd but much faster ) from the Helix CD. So I can get back to FC5 if things dont work out .
I use Scribus off and on and open office. I can take a dump of the home directory. My anticipated problem comes from the various settings files which are in the home directory . Will these be a major problem . Or will Ubuntu take care of this. |
A normal install will not pick up any existing files, configuration, etc.. The only ones I ever bother with are for e-mail and web browser. (Same SW on old and new installs) These I just do with links.
In principle, you could copy any directory that is specfic to an application---eg OpenOffice, GIMP, etc. You can try keeping the same /home folder, but my bias is that it would be more trouble than it is worth |
Thank you !
More questions . I have taken a dump of the home directory . Will it work with Ubuntu or will it check the Linux distribution. I have also taken an Rsync backup . Same question . If it checks and refuses to copy then there is a problem . ------ By the way I replied YES to all the questions you got listed . |
