Fastest Ubutu-derived distro?

I'm pretty firmly in the Slackware-Gentoo-Arch camps, but on a test machine I've installed Kubuntu. I've been pleased with certain aspects of it. My question: Is there a "turbo" or otherwise optimized derivative of Ubuntu? The standard installation feels pretty slow in comparison with Slackware, Gentoo and Arch, I guess because the Ubuntu devs had added a lot of things to make thing more friendly.

Thanks.

just uninstall the junk you don't want, that'll make it faster.

Yeah, I guess that's the best way to go about it. I was thinking of starting from the other direction -- a minimal Ubuntu derivative that I could then add stuff to. Six of one, half-dozen of another, I suppose.

Xubuntu uses XFCE, I think. But you're right, that should be a bit lighter than Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

I did a server install with the MINI CD, then I just started installing the stuff I wanted:

xorg, usplash, usplash-theme-ubuntu, gdm, xfce4, synaptic, mousepad, xfce-appfinder, xfce4-terminal,archiver and some other things.

This install was on a Intel 667mhz with 256mb ram, it is actually can snappy for the lack of power.

I personally like Fluxbuntu, it is fast, installs quickly, and doesn't have a crapload of unnecessary packages with it.
