Fairly constant Ubuntu crashes

Hi

I'm running the 6.10 version of Ubuntu, which I think is very pretty and user-friendly

The only problem is I face fairly regular crashes.

Initially I thought it was a Firefox problem (as that is used frequently) but it also crashes when running a number of applications.

Is this common? I've already done a re-install and that hasn't helped.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Any help would be much appreciated

What exactly crashes? The whole system? Freezes up? Won't re-boot? Are you sure it is not a hardware issue? Bad power supply? Bad ram?

All of it

Often Firefox or Opera will crash, as well as any video or music players I happen to be using.

More often, the whole system will freeze up and I will have to do a re-boot. I don't think its a hardware issue. I had no issues when I tried Mandriva or when I was still a Windows user.

You might want to start firefox or any othe app. that is crashing from the command line, and see what the error message is after a crash. I have had problems on firefox when I open too many tabs, but I think it has to do with the older computer I am using.(reminds self to check up on this)

I will do

Will do

However, the last two crashes I just had were the whole system freezing up. I was able to get out by hitting ctrl and the wake up" key on my keyboard.

This took me back to the log-in screen and when I logged in all the windows were closed and information in the terminal was lost.

I'll keep runnning apps this way if it might help identify the problem

Thanks

Dave

You might try checking your color depth. If it is 16 instead of 24, it has been known to crash using media players especially flash. To check, open a terminal and type sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf <enter> type in pwd then down arrow to a spot where you see the default color depth. arrow right to change to 24 then <ctl>X and save.

My default colour is 24-bit.

Install lm-sensors and the add the sensors applet to the applet bar. You can monitor things like CPU temperature and fan speed to see if the problem is there. An application crash shouldn't take down the Linux kernel. I have occasional Firefox crashes which never require a restart.

Right

We may have found the problem

Xsensors - the graphical frontend - tells me that my fan is running at 0 RPM. Might

The temperature is 33 degrees celsius at the moment but I imagine it will raise once I start doing more processor hungry things

Looks like I'll need a new fan

So it was a hardware problem the whole time?

NoobDave 12-24-2006 12:04 PM

Yes

Yes it was

Fan just broke down a few days ago it seems.

I apologise for doubting the awesome power of Linux
