Failure to load X after install of 6.06 64 bit

After installing, running, and updating Ubuntu 6.06 64 bit (my first linux OS ever), Ubuntu fails to reload itself due to a failure to load the X graphical interface. I was running ubuntu for several hours to update, and this is the second time this problem occured. I reinstalled after formatting again (which is a pain).

I am dual booting with XP Pro with an Nvidia GeForce 6800 GS card.

Please help, any more bugs and linux may not be an option.

Enter the GRUB menu at bootup and select the rescue mode. This will take you to the command line prompt.
Then edit your X11 config file below and change your horizontal & vertical sync. I usually add +/- 20 on both and reload. If its a H/V sync range problem then this will probably fix it.

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
* edit H/V Sync +/- 20 to the existing #'s to increase the range
* then to save it type ":wq" without the quotes and reload.

Edited X in recovery mode, so i can use Ubuntu now. I had to use a generic 'VESA' driver. If anyone has any ideas how to get proper Nvidia drivers working so i can use a better resolution, please let me know.

Download Easyubuntu to install your Nvidia drivers. Directions below:

wget http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/fi...u-3.022.tar.gz
tar -zxf easyubuntu-3.022.tar.gz
cd easyubuntu
sudo python easyubuntu.in
