Evolution pppoe setup in Ubuntu won't work with dsl
 
My DSL which works fine on XP won't work with Ubuntu/Evolution (although my Firefox ran right off the bat). Sympatico my Isp is of next to no help. Have tried to get the pppoed instl'n program running as it's apparently a good prog to use to set up my pophm and smtphm. Downloaded and expanded it to my desktop but cannot get it to run after days of attempts. The instructions say to start the prog by running it from the terminal with ./install_pppoe . I'm a NEWBIE to linux and I've no idea of what to try next. Have been trying to run pppoed from the terminal using sudo commands and I've been trying to install it from the Add Remove Programs/Advanced menu. I'm coming to believe its a slackware prog, so I think I've installed slackware now although the sudo ./ command returns an error message. My Isp requires a specific socket number and encryption to run this particular dsl platform. Maybe there's an easier way (different instl'n prog?) for me to get my Sympatico running. Any ideas. Thanks.

All I can do is commiserate with you. I tried to setup SBC/AT&T DSL. Their registration page requires IE. I asked for the setup parameters and they told me "Internet doesn't work with Linux, Install Windows." What ignorant jerks. I ended up with Comcast cable. I'd suggest you run System-> Administration-> Synaptic Package Manager. You may need to enable the "universe" and "multiverse" repositories using Synaptic. Then search in Synaptic for "pppoe" and install. It's unlikely that you require their version of pppoe, PPP over Ethernet since its a standard protocol. Hope this helps.
