Angry /etc/hosts modification crapped out sudo, synaptic, anything requiring admin

As root login is disabled by default when I restored a previously modified /etc/hosts file I use to block lots of cookies, and other stuff, I negleted to make sure it had my new host name in it and now get the following error:

sudo: unable to lookup ubuntu47 via gethostbyname()

since I'm unable to gain sufficient priviledges to 'mv /etc/hosts.original /etc/hosts' how do I copy it over without reinstalling? I'm fairly new to the Ubuntu/debian/elive environment, and am still learning the differences after moving away from Fedora/Red Hat having used them since Red Hat 3 or 4 all the way to FC4.

I do have some live discs, Knoppix, Elive, Ubuntu, and the Rescue CD. How can I mount the volume and restore the original /etc/hosts file?

I've been so busy at work that I'm a bit Windoze- and Brain-fried. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
