ESSID not being displayed in Ubuntu 6.10

I just upgraded from Dapper to Edgy. Everything so far seems to work fine, expect that there are no ESSID's being displayed. I had to type my ESSID, the network password and the wireless works. But it wont display any other ESSID expect the one I manually entered. Dapper was displaying the ESSID's just fine. I thank you all for your time and consideration. Looking forward for a solution...

Try the command "sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist <wireless device> scan"

You may find wifi-radar more to your liking. If you want to try it you'll need to disable nm-gnome in System-> Preferences-> Sessions-> Startup Programs Tab. I also removed gnome-network-manager.

Trying to conceal your ESSID doesn't provide any real protection. Use WPA rather than WEP. WEP can be broken in 3 minutes* if a hacker knows what they are doing.

* From a live wireless demonstration by the FBI given in a seminar on wireless security for businesses. Two agents used only common open source tools and cracked a WEP network in 3 minutes. It used the largest bit length as well.
