Error Unable to load Installer Components
 

Error Message "Unable to load Installer Component" - 3 Hours Ago

I tried to install Ubuntu 5.1 on dual boot (second hard disk 20Gb) with WinXP on first hard disk 80Gb. The check for MD5SUM for the downloaded ISO showed the file is ok & without errors.

The first few steps of the installation (language, location etc) went off without any problems.

However, the installation suddenly stopped & I got an error message "unable to load Installer Components from CD - Retry <yes> <no>. When I selected <no> the next screen came up with the message "some Installer Components could not be loaded <continue>. On selecting <continue> I was presented with a list of options that covered all the steps in the installation like "partition disk" , "Load GRUB on Hard Disk" ,............ "Abort Installation" - its like a drop down menu with the installation task list in sequence. Not knowing whether one could proceed with the installation, I selected "Abort Installation" and booted back to WinXP.

Please let me know if its possible to continue with the installation by sequentially selecting options from the list of options.

At the option to "retry", have you tried selecting <yes>?

Tell us, what was the last step in the installation you saw?

It would certainly be instructive for you to attempt to continue the installation using the menue. And it won't do any harm provided you remember not to do anything to hda.

I did try hitting <yes> but got the same error message.

The last step I got on the installation was "list of options that covered all the steps in the installation like "partition disk" , "Load GRUB on Hard Disk" ,............ "Abort Installation". Being new to Linux I aborted the installation.

Picked up courage now after reading your reply - will go through the installation and let you know what happens. Yes I have written down your point about not doing anything to hda (otherwise I am likely to forget this in the heat of action )

You misunderstand me... you got that list after you got the error message. What was the last thing you saw before the error message?

The previous screen was "unable to load installer components Check CD integrity."

That was the error message ... what was the last thing before this?

Anyway - I think I know where you're at. It got through initialising the setup and tried to run the installer. The last screen was probably the monitor dialog(?) You seem to have an option to hand-install. Go ahead and try.

There is a good chance the CD is slightly corrupt. (The checksum won't pick up everything that can go wrong.) If you kept the iso - burn another and try again. Be aware - old burners can just keep messing up an iso in subtle ways.

I have kept the ISO - will burn another CD and try again.

By the way I am using a 2002 model Samsung CD writer with Nero 5.0 OEM.... this could be the cause of the problem - you did mention "old burners can just keep messing up an iso in subtle ways".

2002 model Samsung CD writer with Nero 5.0 OEM ... dosn't sound too old. Let us know how you got on.

Tried the CD on my friends computer.. got the same error & it must be that my CD writer is not burning the ISO correctly.

Will try to borrow a newer external CD writer from one of my friend and give another try.

ISO's can be very sensitive to small variations in data - and the md5 hash will correspond to a large number of possible configurations. All the successful check means is that it is unlikely that the disk image is corrupted. Considering the large number of images downloaded every day, is is likely that a forum like this one will regularily see corrupt iso issues like this - where the checksum, nonetheless, worked. There's probably a research paper in this for someone?
