Error msg on trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows

Acer Intel Atom 1.6GHz with Windows XP Pro:

I have tried to install Ubuntu alongside Windows but without success. I can confirm the CD is good as I installed it fine on my Asus EeePc that was running Xandros before.

On the Acer I see the following message:
error: the initrd is too big [O.729108] kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount rootfs on unknown...un-block (8,1)
loading/casper/intrd.lz...
...ready

None of which I am afraid means anything to me, otherwise I may have been able to do a bit more of a search within the forum.

If anyone has any ideas and can explain any possible solution as can be understood by an idiot I would be very grateful. I am enjoying playing with Ubuntu on the netbook and would be very happy to get it up and running on the home PC.
Thanks!

To be absolutely sure the CD is good, (yes, even though you used it to install Ubuntu previously) when you boot the live CD be sure to run the option "Check CD for Defects":https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...IntegrityCheck

At what point do you see this error? Did you install Ubuntu and then try to boot it, and then you saw this error? Or does this happen when trying to run the live CD? Please tel us exactly what you did and at what point you saw this error.
EDIT: For this error you are getting, check the BIOS options for your hard drive if you can. Try changing SATA to IDE if that option is available. See post #6 in this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-8-1-a-646063/

Thanks for your reply: I will follow up as suggested re CD integrity and BIOS options. In the meantime: the error message comes when I try to boot from the live CD as part of the installation. There is an option to allow me to choose a language and then it seems that the system just hangs and eventually the above message pops up.
