Can you tell me if there is any way of getting a log of current system errors? I have Ubuntu 12.10 installed. When I log out, some error messages flash up on the screen, but disappear before I can read them. My Ubuntu is still running, but I would like to correct the errors.

Thanks in advance,
Tim
For error messages they usually go to /var/log/messages, try--
Code:
~# dmesg | less <press spacebar to scroll a windowful>
If it is about the X windowing, the errors are trapped this way:
Code:
~# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
You can also examine other important records:
Code:
~# cat /var/log/debug | less
~# cat /var/log/syslog | less
~# cat /var/log/messages | less
HOpe that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get a list of the errors. They are as follows:
Code:
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf", line 9: reading configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/65-culmus.conf", line 12: Having multiple values in <test> isn't supported and may not works as expected
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/65-culmus.conf", line 34: Having multiple values in <test> isn't supported and may not works as expected

Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/90-fonts-nanum-coding.conf", line 10: Having multiple values in <test> isn't supported and may not works as expected
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/90-fonts-nanum-coding.conf", line 22: Having multiple values in <test> isn't supported and may not works as expected
Why, is there any problem at your system's font rendering? If there is none then that error report may be considered as of minor importance.
Indeed freedesktop does not read from cache in XDG_HOME directory. If you want to eliminate the error you may remove them as well:
Quote:
~$ rm -fr ~/.fontconfig/*
The next system load the error may not be reported anymore if you are lucky. Yet you can leave it alone if there are no material issues in the system or in applications.
