Error: Child termintated with 1 status

I am a newbie so please don't flame (yet). I have ubuntu installed and am able to log on but when I go to anything that requires a password, I get this error:

"Child termintated with 1 status"

(Was going to include pic... can't b/c I am less than 5 posts.)

What is causing this? I have tried to reboot and still nothing.

excactly what do you mean by `when I go to anything that requires a password'? I'd say that logging on indeed requires a password. So does yahoo mail, btw, but I don't suspect that's the problem.
