Erratic printing with 8.10

I am seeing some erratic behaviour when printing ever since I upgraded to 8.10 . Some documents simply don't print, some will only print if the number of copies is less than a dozen or so, some will print one page at a time but not necessarily every page. I am using a HP Laserjet 4MV which has given excellent (and cheap) service for years.

For example:-
Last night my son tried to print a four page OpenOffice document, all text no graphics. Everything appeared to work: The print job appeared in the printer queue, the display on the printer registered the job correctly, all the lights flashed as usual but no paper was processed. I tried exporting it as a pdf and printing from Adobe reader 8 with exactly the same result. I deleted and re-installed the printer, still no print. I then printed it one page at a time which worked for pages 1,3 & 4 but page 2 still didn't print. It did this with both the pdf and odt versions! I copied and pasted page 2 into a complete new document, it still didn't print. I cut and pasted page 2 to a different place in the original document, it still didn't bloody print!! I copied the entire document onto a USB stick took it to another computer & printer and it printed perfectly.

Does this sound familiar?
Is there a known bug somewhere?
I have searched many fora and FAQs but all the problems I find are of the "I can't get my printer to work at all" type. Is anyone else seeing this sort of unpredictable behaviour?
What can I try next?
Cheers
Ian

I've made some progress on this. The problem lies with handling "dot points". If the document has dot points anywhere it doesn't print. I'm going to try other word processors and see what happens there. That will tell me whether the problem is something to do with the printer or the wordprocessor.

Cheers
