Emacs does not show characters like šž€. I have tried most combinations of C-x RET {fkl} and whatever these are, but they do not seem to influence anything. Only boxes appear. In Mandriva and SUSE emacs shows these, but not in Ubuntu. Any ideas?
Have you tried to see if the .emacs file in your home directory for the working distros is the same as the .emacs file in the home directory on Ubuntu?
It could be that the different distros have different default .emacs files that might be your problem. This might also be related to the X-server versions on these systems...? (Guess)
