Question Edubuntu 11.10 - no password to install update packages?

I built an Edubuntu 11.10 virtual machine under VMWare to assist a member over on the Newbie forum. I just noticed that it does not ask for a password to install software updates. Is this by design? I know that since about 10.10 Ubuntu does not require authentication to CHECK for updates.

TIA,

Ken

p.s. I started the VM after several days to do the updates so I do not think I have a cached credentials situation.

p.p.s. Edubuntu 11.04 requires my password to install updates.

p.p.p.s. I just restored the 11.10 VM from backup. I logged in and attempted to install a package from the Software Center - I was prompted for password. I canceled this action so I am sure I do not have a cached credentials situation. Again Software Update does NOT require authentication to install packages.

Are you using sudo when you do your updates? If so, and you actually want it to require a password, then do this:

Code:
grep -i "NOPASSWD" /etc/sudoers
If it returns with something like this:

Code:
%sudo	ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
Then take out this part, save the file, log out and then log back in:

Code:
NOPASSWD:
This will have a final result of this:

Code:
%sudo	ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

Thanks kasl33. No, I was not using sudo apt-get. I was as I recall performing the initial batch of updates which were detected by the automated checking after installation and installed with the Update Manager. Of course now I am unable to replicate the situation

I have found that VMWare tends to cache the credentials used to automagically create a VM - at least for a short while. This caching survives a reboot of the VM. Perhaps the issue with Edubuntu was related.

I just completed my 4th VM build and cannot reproduce the issue. I guess it is time to kill this thread.

Thanks again,

Ken
