edgy install hangs with black screen

Hi all!

Downloaded and burned Edgy (32 and 64 bit versions), tried to install but after a couple of minutes watching the initial screen with the Ubuntu logo and the progress bar the monitor went black and then nothing happens!! this with both versions.

It's also affected my Breezy install which now won't boot with the same problem.

Please help!

have you tried safe graphics option from the boot menu?

Yep! same problem, it's not the disk either. I burnt the disk because I tried upgrading to Dapper via update manager but that resulted in Synaptic telling me it couldn't find ia32 libs or something and that I had broken packages on my system, so I thought a clean install was the way to go.

Press F1 and read - options like noapic, no lapic and a vga option were needed for me.
