dual/twin screen behaviour

Hi. I'm pretty experienced in using ubuntu but have got to the point when I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card to a dual DVI out and buing another TFT screen to go with it. I'm aiming for a dual 1600x1200 totaling 3200x1200 pixels so both screens will run the same resolution.

Last time I tried something dual with an old crt monitor I believe that the distro I was using by the time (not ubuntu) was behaving like it was a huge 3200x1200 desktop, not seperated into two screens like in for instance windows.

When using this behaviour dragging your application (say kdevelop) to one of them and hitting the maximize button in the window titlebar blew up the window in full 3200x1200 resolution when you pretty much wanted it to fit on one of the two screens.

Now this is a small problem, but when it comes to fullscreen apps, this can be a pain in the ass when playing a game for instance, and I'm just wondering if this behavious has changed, or if it's possible to use different "modes" for this, maybe I wasn't using it right. I still want to be able to drag windows across screens to do the normal desktop work and preferable be able to see the start menu on just one screen, but the taskbar perhaps stretched...

Is this possible, anyone with experience within the topic maybe can provide me with info and screens?

Very thankfull for any replies.
Albert

basically you have three options. Twinview, Xinerama, or customization of the xorg file.

look at this thread:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=221174

I've tried twinview but couldn't get fullscreen applications to span only one desktop. Xinerama if I remember three years ago was the big thing, I also tried Xinerama but couldn't get full screen applications to only span one monitor. If you want to move windows from one screen to another twinview is about the only option. I couldn't get it to work recently, I've had it working before but thats before xorg and nvidia evolved into what they are now. It isn't an easy task but some people have had very good experiences with it. Let me know how it turns out....

Ah sorry for not stating but I'm a nvidia fan as long as linux is concerned so it will absolutely be a nvidia twinview card in my computer...

Thanks for the link tho, nice with info!

I will sure tell.. I think it will behave just like I explained tho I'm afraid but I mostly run my own GL stuff so I can make it start in windowed mode no problemo, but I just think the devs could think about this stuff.. I'm nowhere near a OS developer so I wouldn't know where to start even :-)

tnx

You shouldn't have any problems....normally you just have to add a few lines of code to your xorg file and your up and running. Stuff has changed alot since twinview first came out but good luck.
