I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 on an IBM Thinkpad T42 with a Radeon 9600 graphics card. I have setup my xorg.conf to use the radeon drivers not the ati drivers and to use Xinerama to allow me to have the laptop monitor to the left of the external lcd and use it as a dual screen. I've read that using xgl/aiglx with compiz/beryl will provide a "zippier" experience and better graphics/effects/eye-candy. What's the best setup to use? XGL or AIGLX paired with Compiz or Beryl? And I need to keep the functionality of the split screen. Thanks in advance for your help!

beryl is much better than compiz, it has tons of windecos, much more customization, better effects, and is more stable no, seriously, not just an opinion.

as for XGL vs AIGLX, i think it is a matter to trying both and seeing which one works the best. For me, xgl worked aiglx didn't.

not sure about the split screen though...
