Dual Boot XP and Ubuntu

Hi, I'm going to give installing Ubuntu another try. Last time it wreaked a bit of Havoc on my system. I am currently running win XP Pro. I have 2 hard drives, so for simplicity's sake I wanted one to be for windows and the other for Ubuntu.

The last time I tried this, when it overwrote the boot record for grub, I couldn't get back into windows. I had to use the restore disc to overwrite the MBR and then Ubuntu was as good as gone. Anyone have a link to a good guide for dual booting with double hard drives? Is it a special case? Why do you think it killed my Win install last time.

Thanks

I'd also like to do this but I've not seen the same options that I am used to seeing with FC and RHEL when I do the install.

I did note that I grabbed the "desktop" iso. Should I have downloaded the "alternate" image?

Thanks!

Umm I'm no expert on dual booting but I have done it many times. I have seen a few problems here and there with Grub so it might be worth trying lilo if you want. However, I still use Grub if you ask. If you really want to stay with grub then it might be worth looking at how it works and setting it up yourself. More than likely it installed incorrectly, hense your problem.

The link below is pretty good and has, probably more things than what you want but it's always good to know
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/...ies/index.html

there is one good thing about lilo which I don't know if you can do in grub
"You can restore your original MBR anytime, when uninstalling Linux for instance, either by typing /sbin/lilo -u within Linux or typing fdisk /MBR in DOS (this will overwrite the MBR with the original Windows MBR) needless to say you would lose the option to boot into Linux after this and thus access to your Linux partition."

Not bad, inc grub ->

V.good totally grub ->

hope it helps

Im going to try to put the boot record to the location of the linux install so it doesnt overwrite windows MBR. You think that will fix it?

Seems there are some issues with the partitioner with Dapper (latest Ubuntu). Hopefully would be less of an issue with a separate disk.
My advice - install to the second disk, allow it to write the MBR (on the Windows disk).
Easy to resurrect the XP MBR in need.
