dual boot with windows partitioning question

I have a 120gb hdd as the master on ide0 and the primary partition is ~30gb with WinXP installed. I would like to put Xubuntu on the remaining 80+GB or so. How should I do this?

I tried installing it on "largest continuous" free space but the install process craps out after step6 with a msg saying that the root partition is not defined. When I manually edit the partitions and put in a 80GB / partition and a 1GB swap, it again craps out.

What is going on? Can somebody help me?

Acouple of things that may help . . .

1. Have you formatted the remaining 80 gigs? if so, did you specify an / for the system and maybe an /home for your home file?

Did you format using ext 3? or did you format using a windows formatter? Linux cant handle ntfs.
Format the remaining 80 gigs using gparted or equivelant.

Is your cd ok? maybe its just a bad image.

I would use the partitioner that came with your cd.

Did any of this help?
