Driver problems

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04-1 on a machine, and the video and audio are not working properly. The video will not reach it's fullest resolution, and I cannot make the audio what it's supposed to.

I have the motherboard support CD with all the windoze drivers on it, but don't know how to use them to work in Linux.

Any advise or suggestions.

Thanks

Your Windows drivers CD is pretty much useless, here.

Try this:

Reboot your PC, and when you see "Grub loading...", press ESC and select Recovery Mode.

After a few lines of text, a menu will appear. Run xfix, then Normal Boot.

If that doesn't fix the issues, come back and post a list of your PC's hardware, and the contents of your xorg.conf file.

Cheers

That did no good. Where is the xorg.conf file located.

I have tried lspci, and gotten at least an idea of what kind of hardware I have:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter (rev 03)

Thanks for the lspci output
Check this out: http://hardware4linux.info/component/24750/
So I'd get myself a cheap NVIDIA card, use NVIDIA's proprietary drivers and disable that SiS stuff in the BIOS.

xorg.conf is at /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and
locate filename is a very useful command to know.

Well, unfortunately, getting another video card is totally out of the question. So I guess I'll either have to go back to WinDoze or get used to 960x600 (most dialog boxes don't even fit that screen).

Thanks for the locate command, I appreciate it.

Have a look at http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/

You may find some SiS driveres for Ubuntu there.

Note: Mandriva 2009.0 works out of the box with the SiS Chipsets (unfortunately the newer 2009.1 does NOT yet)
