Unhappy Display problem in vaio...

i installed ubuntu 9.10 On my VAIO lap (vpccw15fa).I tried installing the display nvidia driver but after restarting the screen just went blank.
this happens every time i install it.
i am not able to dim my screen brightness in ubuntu ?
how do i get the proper graphic card driver so that i can activate my desktop effects and possibly solve my display brightness issue. my brightness is always at maximum.
will this cause any hardware damage(display)?
please ! please! help.

my laptop configuration is :
model - vaio vpccw15fa
320gb hardisk , intel core 2 duo 2.20, nvidia 8210M 256mb graphic card.

Since nobody has replied to your thread thus far, I would recommend installing the current version of Ubuntu, which is 10.04. This will have a newer nvidia driver than 9.10. Also, the next version of Ubuntu 10.10 will be out in a few weeks, and will likely have the latest driver from nvidia.

To install the nvidia driver in Ubuntu, simply go to: system > administration > hardware_drivers, and enable the nvidia driver if it is listed there, which it should be. See this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia
NOTE: If you had previously tried to install the driver from nvidia.com, you must completely remove that driver before installing the driver from the Ubuntu repos.
So just do a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04, then add the nvidia driver from the Ubuntu repos.

And welcome to the LQ forums!
