display area offset or larger than screen

So, yesterday I got Windows 8.1 off the computer, and Ubuntu on it. Yay.

Then I noticed that the screen position is either too large, or moved slightly to the left. Could be both, I suppose. So, what should I do about it? Please respond in as luddite as possible.

Have you check the display settings in your Settings menu

I messed around in both "display" and "appearance" but neither of those has an option to adjust the screen size or alignment. I think, now, it's the alignment, more than anything.

Check the monitor settings depending on how old it is there should be an auto-adjust.

Now I feel dumb. Let's never speak of this again.
Thanks for your help.
