Disk usage analyzer not even close

I just installed Ubuntu on this machine yesterday, and for the most part it seems to be doing pretty well, but there's this strange quirk that's going to be a pain later on.

The hard drive is 160 gig, but the Disk Usage Analyzer says it's 240. It also says that I've used up 40 gb (which is contradicted elsewhere, which I'll explain in the next paragraph).

If I right-click the Filesystem in the Computer window and bring up the Properties, it says that I've used up 20 gb and that there's 112 gb left (132 gb total).

Based on the programs I've installed and the files I've put on it, I think that 20 gb used is more realistic, but I'm not certain.

I'm guessing that the Filesystem Properties is more accurate, with the 28 gb discrepancy in size to be normal.

I would like to have some amount of certainty that what I'm getting is accurate. Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks,
Andrew

I suggest that you try to get some disk usage figures from the command line. Use the fdisk command to get the size of all of your partitions:

fdisk -l

Then use the df command to get the usage of each partition. Something like:

df -h /dev/sda1

See:

man df

Check the properties (of Disk usage analyzer) to see what's included in the numbers.
Personally I find it a useless adornment and never use it.
