Difficulty with language support

Hello,

I had an LQ account before, but I forgot my password, apparently
I have an old laptop on which I have Xubuntu installed (after a few Win2k, Gentoo, Slackware installs), and I'm having a little trouble with the language support.

I wish to be able to type in Korean, such as for IMs and e-mails. However, I do not want to see the whole translations in the GUI. I installed from LiveCD, from which I selected Korean as the language at the boot selection. When it was all finished, I saw the whole GUI translated into Korean. I was able to type in Korean, however, which was a good thing. It's not a big deal, but I'd prefer English. So I logged off and logged back in, changing the default language to English. Now, I see the GUI in English, but scim is not even running. Even if I run it from console, I cannot type in Korean, or any other language, for that matter.

So, for now, I'm back in Korean language setting. To simply put, I'd like to change the language setting to English, while retaining the ability to type in Korean.

Any ideas will be appreciated.
I'm using scim, by the way.
Thanks

Never mind; I followed the first few lines of http://www.mrbass.org/linux/ubuntu/scim/ and now I can type in korean in English GUI language mode.
