Differences on Ubuntu install media
I'm a bit confused. Are about to set up a Ubuntu machine. But what are the differences on the Ubuntu desktop CD's and the Ubuntu server CD's.
If I run setup from a Ubuntu Desktop CD will I be able to configure the system as a server?
/A.

Yes, but it will probably require much more manual intervention (it will default to desktop install). If you intend to set up a server use the server install CD and don't bother with the desktop one. It is different, contains other packages (I think there is no window manager on the server CD, for example).

No, but the installer have different options, at least of what I remember. The documents are usually very scarce on this matter.
Well, here is some old and vague document. http://www.ossblog.it/post/338/inter...server-project
Dapper is out already ...

The same repositories are used for all. I run a web server on a desktop install. I think the real question is do you want command line administration or GUI administration. The service CD installs no desktop but if I'm not mistaken, installing a single package, ubuntu-desktop, will add Gnome to a server install.

Sure, same repositories for all. But the installer remains somewhat different and it has different options (it will ask you what server you want to install, for example). Just as the packages ON the CD are different. Depending on what you want to do, you're faster using the appropriate CD.
