dial-up modem speed
I have successfully connected to the internet tonight using an ext modem, however, the speed is dreadfully slow and I wish to know which file to edit to improve this (under W98 the same modem is much faster).
I used the 'Network Settings' tool to configure the modem (ubuntu 5.04) and can't see any options re the speed of the connection.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Slower in terms of what - resolving web address, downloading data, sending e-mails, what? Also, let us know what modem you are using, whether you required an additional driver and if so what, and any parameters passed to wvdial/KInternet or whatever you are using to dial.

Thanks for your swift reply fouldsy, the modem is a 3Com US Robotics, Ubuntu recognised it without any help and the speed of loading pages is abysmally slow.
When using Knoppix on the same modem, the speed is equivalent to W98, so I'm sure that it is a settings problem, I just need to know what file to edit to increase the speed. I use 'Network Settings' on the Gnome desktop to dialup, so I am not sure whether that uses wvdial, ppp, etc.
Hope this is the info that you require.
Thanks again.

sometimes network speeds get reported wrong.
trying running a bandwidth test inside both OS's to show us how much of a difference we are talking about.

I haven't run a bandwidth test I'm afraid, but the fact that the same modem on Knoppix will load pages in less than a quarter of the time it takes in Ubuntu, surely illustrates that it is much slower.
Thanks again.
