Question Dial-up and apt get

I Have windows and kubuntu and on my dial up modem windows detects the modem and it works fine.
but kubuntu can't connect through it and i was wondering if there was a way to download a program through windows ,burn it to a disk, and then install it to kubuntu.

Yes. Just be aware that you need to manually download all the dependencies as well.

Just download the file to a shared location and you don't even have to burn it (linux can read from NTFS), you can just copy it to linux. Better yet, put it on the shared FAT32 partition you created before you dual booted since both windows and linux can read and write to FAT32.

Yeah, libs and the like. They are file specific. For example, program A might need lib-B and lib-C. Program D might need program A, which in turn needs lib-B and lib-C. So to install Program D, you need to download and install all three of those. You see why they created package managers? This gets out of hand really quickly.

I should have mentioned, but for dialup modems, the best thing to do is to get an external hardware modem that uses the serial port (not USB). These almost always work in linux without any additional setup or drivers.

I found an old us robotics external modem for mac.
will that work for linux?
the reason i ask is i don't have the right cable to hook it up to my pc yet and i don't want to get a cable if it won't work.
if it will work should i get a usb cable or a serial cable or does it matter?

I have absolutely no idea.

Look the modem up in the HCL and see if you can find any drivers online.

SERIAL!!! Usb can go flaky or require drivers to install. Any real hardware modem will work via serial with no extra drivers. It should just be recognized as a modem on /dev/modem (/dev/ttyS0, I believe).

What model number is it? Did you verify that it is a hardware modem (i.e. google or check the HCL)?
