i finally got xserver and gnome started when i get to the loin screen and type username and password i come in to an empty desktop no icons no menus no taskbar what do i need to do to make the desktop complete
Are you using gdm? What gui are you selecting to start? That kinda sounds like failsafe mode. I've also seen gnome do that with everything installed correctly and i had to delete all my .gnome dirs and the like in my home directly bc something in there got hosed. You could also be missing a package or something. Try apt-get install nautilus or some other gnome app to try and force it to install anything required for the gnome desktop you might be missing.
Nah, that guy has the other problem I also had, he cant start X at all . That is a video card driver issue he's having before he can ever even get to a login prompt on kdm.
