Desktop or Server Edition?

Hi everyone,
I will install a Linux Ubuntu on my laptop. What version shall I choose?
Desktop Edition or Server Edition?
Does Server Edition contain the same features of the Desktop version plus some others? Or it is just a completely different OS?

What can I do more with the server version?

Is there any advantage/disadvantage?

Thanks

The desktop version is probably what you're looking for. It's the same OS, just a different collection of packages. The server addition probably doesn't have a graphical interface, just a command line and things like webserver, mail server, print server, etc. The desktop will have a GUI and things like Firefox, email client, openoffice, etc.

If you want some functionality in one or the other, you can always add it if you have an internet connection. Ubuntu's package manager is easy to work with and install new programs from the vast repository.

Thanks for the info.
I am downloading the Desktop Version.
Once downloaded and burned on CD, I will need to install it on a external harddrive. How do I choose the disk to use? Does the installation software specify where to install it?

"a" indicates laptop hard disk.

sdb

"b" indicates your next disk (external)

Just so you know, this is a problematic way to install Linux... Good luck w/ it. It works sometimes, doesn't work a lot of times, and is almost always a pain. You either get Grub errors which are a pain to fix, even w/ SGD, or once installed and running, its slow as molasses. I'm guessing the USB speed must be the bottleneck when it works. Use the external to back up your main drive, partition the drive, and install the way it's supposed to be installed. Also, installing this way, almost always requires the Alt. install CD, I've yet to see or get the Live CD to work on an external drive install.

I am the lucky one then
I`ve just installed it and it works fine. for now. finger crossed.
I`ve just had the OS crashed the very first time I booted into Ubuntu.
