Desktop goes blank after installation.
Hello,
I have installed Ubuntu-8.10-desktop on my desktop i386 machine. The problem I am facing is that when I login, the desktop loads properly. But soon, everything disappears except the wallpaper. Sometimes, I can get command prompt (Alt-F1 etc.). From the command prompt, I can see things running fine. On some occasions, everything hangs and I have to reboot. Can anyone please tell me what the problem is? If you need any more information, do let me know. |

I thought it would be nice to explain this problem via a small video clip. So I captured the following video with my cellphone. You can see the icons, menubar etc on the desktop and then, everything just disappears...and I can't do anything after that. Everything freezes.

Log in a terminal
#sudo apt-get update etc If bug persists then install more desktops ... kde, xfce, fluxbox, enlightenment,...etc file a bug report |
I am afraid but I can't try that because of limited bandwidth at my home. Anyways...thanks for the help. Time to don the hacker's hat. :)
