Dapper/SMB not authenticating on XP Printer (Laserjet 4)

My first post. I've Googled for days and cannot find an answer.

I installed Dapper a few days back and cannot get my XP-based HP LJ4 printer to print out via smb. Samba and the Gnome Printer setup GUI (system -> administration -> printing) will find the workgroup/host/printer just fine. Then, when sending a print job the printer will accept the job and then pause. If I restart, it goes back to pause. But, Dapper/smb seems to know that the XP printer exists and is ready to go. Is this an authentication problem for Dapper?

I've tried:

1) editing both smb and cups .confs as per some of the more popular threads on LQ
2) reverting to the smb version 2.x.x in Breezy
3) re-enabling/re-setting all XP services (Unix printing enabled, re-setting share privileges, etc.)
4) installing KDE to use their "new" printer setup application (spiffy!)
5) tried performing a setup using eth0 and wlan0
6) re-installing cups, samba, and all the ancillaries
7) installing the printer as anonymous, guest, or with my ubuntu login and password
8) caps and lowercase in all entries to try and tease it into working

I'm just out of ideas! Dapper is just too good to give up on to go back to Breezy.

Thanks a lot. cavchem

Looks like this is a known bug for SMB priting

the i386 package for smblient version 3.0.21b is here:

https://launchpad.net/+builds/+build/170829/smbclient

You can unpack the .deb file (e.g. right-click and select "Extract here" in the menu), and find the old smbspool inside. Move the smbspool to /usr/bin/ replacing the current file.

Thanks!

sbassett:

Thank you, it's printing perfectly out of OpenOffice.org. Where do I send the complimentary bag of roasted coffee? By the way, how did you figure that trick out? Was there a bug report/workaround that I missed? I looked everywhere before asking, since I was worried about having my hand slapped for using the Dapper beta.
