Dapper Drake and nVidia- X crashes
I just installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake on my desktop, and have followed the guide to installing the nVidia binary drivers that are on Ubuntu's wiki. That didn't work, so I tried using EasyUbuntu. Using their script, I can successfully install the nVidia driver, but X will not start with the modified xorg.conf in place. Instead, it crashes. How should I go about fixing this?

Running that command gives me an error about the md5sum of my xorg.conf file. I run the command it tells me to, then try the nVidia command again, and the command successfully runs. However, when I restart X, I get the same crash as before.

I have the same problem.
I have an old 32mb GeForce2 card in my Dapper machine.
After this first happened I restored xorg.conf by using the backup and the x-session works ok again. I used "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to reset my xorg.conf to default settings but it doesn't recognise my GeForce2 card at all, (runs fine in my WinXP dual boot). So I seem to be permanently stuck on a max res of 1024x768 in Dapper. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I found the solution- after you install the nVidia driver from easyubuntu, go into your xorg.conf file, change the driver "nv" to "nvidia", and you're all set. That should be it!
