Custom wallpaper that displays system information

I'm completely new to Ubuntu/Linux but one of the reasons I am so drawn to it is the scale of customization. I was wondering if anybody could shed some light on how to create a wallpaper that displays system information, such as CPU usage and memory usage in real-time. I know there are standalone programs that dock to the side of the display, but is it possible to have that displayed as a wallpaper?

Any help/examples would be awesome.

Is it possible to change the desktop environment to incorporate the statistics in the desktop background?

Sorry, but i don't get your question.

To run conky, what you need is an X. Yes, you can change a desktop environment of course (e.g Gnome, KDE, Xfce, LXDE).

btw, have you checked conky screenshot, is that what you want?
