Custom bootsplash?

Is it possible to do a custom bootsplash for Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn without much headache? I've been looking in all sorts of forum for it and they all say stuff like install a kernel patch and programs and a whole lot of other stuff, the configure like a dozen of files and thats only the half I understood . but I am a lazy guy I just wanna have a nice looking computer without too much hassle. So is there any easy way to change the Ubuntu splash screen into something colorful verbose with a background picture (like BackTrack 2.0 ) I want to place a simple 640x480 (or bigger if possible) JPEG image (but if some color play or type changing is needed I'll do it)

and while at it, I got a minor question. Is it normal for my video card to be in 52 Degrees Celcius if all I am running atm is Ubuntu With Beryl and using Totem player with Visualization?

Thanks in Advance

P.S.

I got an additional problem concerning GRUB colors. I placed a spashscreen in the choise area but the colors dont work well, The colors are resetted back to default (White text, backbackground) even though I changed it in the setting to:

color red/blue blue/light-gray

however I am not sure I placed it in the right place, I placed it under the

# Pretty colours

line

You should check out splashy. Sounds like it will do what you want.

yeah, ive seen it but there so much thing there involving editing the kernel and stuff like that... I got lost and confused by it. What I wanted to know is if theres an easier way without the whole kernel editing thing.

Ubuntu already has a bootscreen, so maybe its possible to simple change some file (of the ubuntu logo) into a picture i want

Sorry to bring back such an ancient subject BUT I need help... I've installed Splashy configured the splash-screen BUT the computer still boots with the old splash screen. I've read the Installation guide and I think I found the reason why:

Quote:
Customizing Splashy

In order to install Splashy in your own custom distribution or variant of UNIX system, you would need to:

1.
tell the system to start ”/sbin/splashy boot” as early as possible
2.
some “glue” to calculate the progressbar and update it using: splashy_update “progress NN”
3.
you will need to exit Splashy at some point with: splashy_update exit

In Linux you would need to pass “vga=NNN” and “splash” to your kernel as a parameter. vga= is needed by the Kernel to enable the framebuffer. “splash” tells Splashy that it should start at boot. In order for Splashy to know this, it will attempt to read from /proc/cmdline looking for the keyword “splash”. This check should only happen on Linux, and not on any other UNIX system.
I dont know how to make /sbin/splashy boot start as early as possible.... And the rest I dont understand at all.

I didn`t work with Splashy, but there is a way to manage your bootsplash:
program StartUp-Manager is something that help you for grub and bootsplash configuration. Grub images you can find here (and some tutorials to make your own image).
I hope that would help you.

That depends on what graphics card you have, if its lappy or desktop and how its cooled. But yeh that sounds about right, thats not too hot. Mine runs at 52 idle in my laptop.
