Question Creating MakeFiles and dependencies

HI friends,
i have a small doubt..please help me in this context.
while i tried to read a makefile which is written by my collegues under solaris and my work is to convert into linux makefile.
in this make file a dependent file is there in which i found these lines. can anyone help me to understand these following lines.....

[ -f /usr/bin/mach ] && MACHINE=$`/usr/bin/mach`
[ -f /usr/bin/machine ] && MACHINE=$`/usr/bin/machine`
[ -f /bin/machine ] && MACHINE=$`/bin/machine`

They are tests like "if X then Y".
Depending on where the "mach" or "machine" executable is found the MACHINE variable is set accordingly.
