Creating desktop shortcuts

Hi im new to linux and just installed Ubuntu 6 for a work computer and am trying to create a desktop icon/shortcut for Netscape browser.

i just installed Netscape into my user/local/netscape folder

if i go into the terminal navigate to that folder and "sudo netscape" the program comes up fine.

if i dont use sudo, netscape wont keep my settings like homepage or user profiles. and i cant seem to make a launcher on the desktop that can sudo that command without asking for a password.

i logged in on root and made sure that the permissions on the netscape folder were all open. how do i get netscape to run without having to use the terminal?

anh help would be apperciated

It seems to me that your real problem is that you're running netscape as the root user. That's not a good idea. You need to find out first why it's not creating/keeping a permanent profile under your everyday user account. Once you have that solved, then you can go back and create a shortcut for it.

How did you install Netscape? You should just install it from Synaptic and everything will be configured for you. Then you can put a shortcut on your desktop.

hmm didnt think to try synaptic. i downloaded the install from netscape. ive narrowed it to some permissions thing. since root seems to be the default owner for just about every folder its causing aproblem somwhere i just cant pinpoint it . ive changed permissions for all its install folders and wherever it seems to be writing the rpofiles but i still cant get it to save settings unless im root.

ill try the package and see what that does. thanks
