I've used Mandrake for a few years now, but the RPM system has finally frustrated me to no end. I have tried Debian, and I enjoy the apt-get system. Thus, I heard of Ubuntu; I've heard no bad reviews of Ubuntu, and it seems very promising. I realize I'll have to format / and /usr, but I'm hoping it'll be worth it. This is where Ubuntu Linux users come in; separate the propaganda from the fact! I'd like to know as many cons about Ubuntu as I can. I'd like to know all the bad things about this distro vs. Mandrake, including things like packages, speed, stability, ease of use, etc. I don't have a spare PC or HD partition to test install it, so I want to know everything I can before making the jump. Thanks.
EDIT: sidenote, has anyone been able to get the iPod working with Ubuntu? It took me forever to get it to work with Mandrake, and I'd like to know if I'll face the same headaches with Ubuntu.
You should download the Ubuntu Live CD. That way you can test it out before installing.
Personally, I have nothing bad to say about Ubuntu. I wouldn't think of using any other Linux distribution for a desktop. And my iPod works perfectly with it. When you plug it in (I used firewire) it will detect it and create a scsi device and mount point. Point gtkpod to that mount point and you're in business.
I have been a Mandrake user for some time before I switched to Ubuntu. I have now been using Ubuntu for a couple of months now and I see no disadvantages, but only advantages.

Got my 4g 20gb iPod working in 5 minutes using usb2.0 with this tutorial:
Well, I tried out the live/install DVD, and it had me sold in less than a day. I just finished switching over, and everything's smooth and great. And I love apt-get and synaptic; ten times better than Mandrake's RPM system. Ubuntu is my new distro of choice!
Same here. I always thought I needed a dual boot setup with windows to run Itunes and play with my iPod, until I learned how easy it was to set up in Linux using gtkpod.
