connect to DHCP

how do I connect to a DHCP server ???
In windows I'm assigned an IP address automatically, I didn;t do a thing to connect to the internet everything is set up from the beginning. In Local Area Connection Status in Windows they say I'm assigned the IP from DHCP, so how to do it in Ubuntu?

What kind of connection do you use,wireless or wired?If it's wired Ubuntu should've detected and configured it.Post the output of ifconfig and iwconfig from the terminal.
What's the version of Ubuntu?Anyway,maybe you haven't open System>Administration>Network and tried to configure the wired connection from there?
It's simple,but for wireless it's a little more complicated.

The default for Ubuntu wired and wireless is DCHP. Right click the Networking icon in the upper right applet bar. You'll see 2 check boxes, Enable Networking and Enable Wireless. To use wireless, both boxes should be checked. Left click and you can select which network to connect to.
