Talking Configuring Monitor setup on Hoary

I have just installed Hoary and am loving it, Suse user for about 3 years but this??
I have a problem with my Monitor detection, It has been picked up fine just given a lousy default resolution. I have tried to change it but am only given the choice of worse resolutions. What do I need to do to manually configure the monitor setup?

The monitor in question is nothing special, just a generic Packard Bell badged CRT.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip on xserver-xorg. I have a further question: How do you select the resolutions that you want to be avialable? I've tried all the keys I could think of to get a * in the resolutions that I wanted, but to no avial. Please help.

Cheers,

Rod

I had this exact resolution problem, you need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Type "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and find the display section. You should see a bunch of lines like

Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"

If you don't see any resolutions higher than 1024x768 at the colour depth you want, add them to the list (e.g. add "1280x1024" to Modes under Depth 24 if you think your graphics card can support it. Then reboot and you should be able to choose the resolution you want.

xserver-xorg is not installed

I tried

'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg'

and I got the error,

'xserver-xorg is not installed'

Isn't this 'xorg' thing kind of important for running X?

Forgive me, but what to you mean by 'ubuntu update'? Is that some command line command, or a menu option or some other thing?

Sometimes that's related to the refresh settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You need to get the correct horizontal and vertical numbers for your monitor.

Here's mine for my Hitachi CM751 19inch monitor:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Generic Monitor"
# Option "DPMS"
        HorizSync 31-93
        VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection
And I'm runnng it at 1280x1024 at 85Hz.

And then, part of the screen subsection:
Code:
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4400]"
        Monitor "Generic Monitor"
        DefaultDepth 24
...
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection
