Configure Video Card

Hello:

I am new to Ubuntu. I have been using Fedora core before and I've just switched to Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake. Could anyone point me on how to configure the video card on Ubuntu ? Is there any other way than manually editing the xorg.conf file ? Right now, my driver is being set to a generic VESA driver. On Fedora Core, there used to be a nice tool "system-config-display" that allowed me to choose the driver for both my video card and screen.

Thanks
Ministre

I believe there is a program in one of the menus labeled "Display" or something similar. You can use that, but I would recomend editing the xorg.conf file.

Try the command
Code:
$sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

If you're using nVidia drivers, I would suggest just simply downloading the nVidia package in synaptic, restarting X, and then using System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution for that...which should be all you need, as with the proper drivers, 90% of the vid cards out there will be properly detected.

If you're using ATi, my condolences. It's not easy to configure, but it can be done.

However, if you are looking to get all the "extras" working in ubuntu, might I suggest: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Cheers,
