You want to change one-time the screen resolution to 1280x1024? This is easiest to be done through system settings (system settings -> displays). However, you have to switch off the laptop screen, or use a dual desktop configuration (if these screens are of different resolution, you cannot have the perfect picture at both of them in the same time).
I haven't too much experience, but what I remember, modern distros usually automatically find the optimal resolution. You may have to switch off one monitor though.
