Complete Ubuntu Swap
 

Hello all-

At home I have Ubuntu Linux installed on a 3gig Hard Drive. Reason being is that I didn't have anyting greater at the time :D. After tinkinering around with Ubuntu I have decided that I really like it and want to migrate my OS to a bigger hard drive. So my question is, do guys recommend any type of software to do a full swap from HDD to HDD (OS and all?).

I have never done this type of thing before so I was wondering if you guys had any ponters. Thanks :)

What does this mean? Explain like I'm 5 years old....

Does it mean that instead of making a Swap partition on your Hard-Drive, you simply want to use a whole Hard-disk (Your good old 3GB HDD)?

Well, I am not sure that you can do that, but you can try.

Moreover, I don't see any requirement of such a swap memory.
You can simply go for a 512MB partition and format it as swap. :)

He wants to copy his entire 3GB harddrive to a larger one so he doesn't have to re-install.

I know there are commercial apps, but I don't recall seeing any opensource ones...

I guess there would be a lot of troubles if he does so.

Doing that won't be a good idea at all.
That would mess up some files such as the fstab etc. which will have to be configured by hand.

Just a personal thought.

there is a very good open source program for this as well, it's called cp :)

you can copy the data partition for partition with the command
cp -ax /from/partition /to/partition

After that you of course need to upgrade your /etc/fstab to reflect the changes and reinstall grub/lilo, but it is not that difficult. Just make sure you have a Live linux cd handy in case your computer won't boot. There is also lots of info about this to be found on google.
